BTS’ label HYBE finds itself under fire after an internal “Weekly Music Industry Report” leaked during a recent National Assembly audit in South Korea.

The report has revealed a trove of disparaging remarks about K-pop artists from various agencies, including SM Entertainment’s RIIZE, NCT Dream, aespa, YG Entertainment’s Treasure, even their own artists and many more.

Intended as a confidential review of K-pop trends and public opinion, the document, compiled by an executive known as “A”  – a former music critic and now editor in chief of HYBE’s Weverse Magazine – was circulated among top HYBE officials, including Chairman Bang Si Hyuk.

The report’s content included blunt critiques of both rival and in-house groups, with comments such as “Their plastic surgery was overdone” and “The members are shockingly unattractive.” These leaks are now circulating on social media with the label now facing a backlash from fans.

The publication of these statements has sparked outrage, prompting HYBE CEO Lee Jae-san to issue a public apology, taking full responsibility for the document’s language and confirming steps to mitigate the damage.

In the Oct. 24 audit as shared by Korea JoongAng Daily, Rep. Min Hyung-bae of South Korea’s Democratic Party grilled HYBE’s Chief Operating Officer, Kim Tae-ho, on the ethics of the agency’s internal practices.

The document, which Lee admitted was meant to gauge public opinion on K-pop trends, crossed professional boundaries by including derogatory opinions about idols’ appearances and talents. 

“The inclusion of provocative language and personal opinions is unacceptable,” Lee stated as shared by the Korean news outlet, acknowledging the serious breach of professionalism and pledging immediate action.

In response, HYBE has suspended all further reports of this kind and is reaching out to the artists and agencies affected, offering formal apologies to rebuild trust.

Additionally, local media reports indicate that the executive behind the report has been removed from their position, underscoring HYBE’s commitment to accountability.
