For many Filipinos, Jose Mari Chan‘s songs usher in the Christmas season, a time for being happy and hopeful. And while the people start making wishes for the holidays, the veteran singer also has his own — world peace.
“Currently, my Christmas wish is for peace in the world,” he told INQUIRER.net in a recent interview in Makati City where Repertory Philippines launched its new production “Going Home to Christmas,” using Chan’s songs.
Article continues after this advertisement“When I read the papers every day and I watch CNN every day, it hurts me to see that the war in Ukraine continues. And between Israel and Iran, bombing the Gaza, it really hurts me. And I’m afraid that it could lead to a third world war. So I pray for peace, peace in the world,” he continued.

He shared there has never been a time when his Christmas wish was not granted. “I’m convinced that God loves me, and he has showered me with all His blessings,” he said.
“But I also know that the spirit of Christmas is giving and sharing. So the blessings that we have in life, we must learn to share them with those in need. And when you look around, there’s so many of our brothers and sisters who need help,” he continued.
Article continues after this advertisementAnd to Filipinos who have become hopeless amid all the anticipation for the big celebration, Chan reminds them, “the spirit of Christmas has to come from within.”
Article continues after this advertisementHe explained: “It’s not in the neon lights, it’s not in the sparkling lights, the Christmas trees, it should come from within. And the sooner that we accept our limitations, the more we can imbibe the spirit of Christmas.”
Article continues after this advertisementChan will not be going on stage for Rep’s original musical play. But the theater company said the singer’s spirit will be felt all throughout the production because of his songs that inspired the story.
“When you go home after watching ‘Going Home to Christmas,’ embrace your children, kiss them, spend more time with them,” Chan said.
Article continues after this advertisement“I want them to go home and embrace their family, love them more, and cherish your families. Because as parents, we don’t know how much longer we have on Earth. So relish the moment. Don’t waste the moment,” he added.
“Going Home to Christmas” is directed by Rep’s Artistic Director Jeremy Domingo. It will run at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in Makati City starting Nov. 29.
