Speaking out on issues regarding idols and the K-pop industry he’s currently dwelling in, SEVENTEEN’s Seungkwan recently took to Instagram to address the often-overlooked struggles faced by K-pop idols. 

His post, though not directly naming anyone, is widely believed to touch on recent controversies surrounding his label’s parent company, HYBE. The statement came at a time when HYBE faced scrutiny after internal documents with alleged disparaging comments about idols were disclosed during a recent audit by South Korea’s National Assembly committee.

Seungkwan’s post conveyed a message about the emotional toll and relentless pressures idol life brings.

Seungkwan also highlighted the resilience and dedication of K-pop idols who continually strive to deliver high-caliber performances despite numerous obstacles.

“We have experienced enough pain, fallen apart, and somehow overcome it,” he said. For him, these experiences not only illustrate idols’ enduring spirit but also underscore the need for greater respect and understanding from the public. 

He continued, urging fans and industry figures alike not to treat idols as commodities: “You don’t have the right to easily intrude on our narrative… we are not your items.”

Seungkwan expressed gratitude for the encouraging messages he has exchanged with other idols, describing these interactions as a source of strength. 

Alongside his statement, Seungkwan included a handwritten letter from Haewon of NMIXX, acknowledging the support and camaraderie shared among K-pop artists. 

His post has since fueled discussions on how the K-pop industry might address idol welfare and ethical treatment, especially given the growing global influence of K-pop as a genre and cultural movement.
